Group Study Exchange | Print |

Attention: open in a new window.

The Rotary Foundation's Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

In a typical four-week tour, applicants participate in five full days of vocational visits, 15 to 20 club presentations, 10 to 15 formal visits and social events, two to three days at the district conference, three to four hours per day of cultural and site tours, and three to four hours per day of free time with host families.

For each team member, the Foundation provides the most economical round-trip airline ticket between the home and host countries. Rotarians in the host area provide for meals, lodging, and group travel within their district.

In April 2010, the Rotary Club of Jefferson County hosted a team of five from Espirito Santo, Brazil.

Machadinho - Team Leader
I'm Agostinho F. Machado, from Castelo, State of Espirito Santo, Brazil. I'm 71 and I have the privilege of accompanying these GSE visitors as their leader. I was admitted to Rotary International in 2005 and currently I'm the President of my Club. I graduated in Philosophy back home and in 1962 I was awarded a Rotary Scholarship to study English in the U.S. Later I was admitted to the Foreign Service School at Georgetown University in DC for a Master's Degree in Political Sciences under an Organization of American States (OAS) scholarship. From 1965 to 1974 I worked for the same OAS in DC as a Scholarship Program Specialist. Upon returning home in 1974 I slowly managed to move back to my hometown where I worked as an English Teacher until retirement in 2003. I live in a coffee farm 5km out of town with my wife Benilda (52) and my son Paulo (24). We love to read and to deal with plants, animals and nature. I've traveled extensively throughout the U.S. but this is my first time in Oregon. During this visit I'll do my best to help these GSE visitors to fulfill all their expectations about going on this trip to Oregon. I also wish I'll be able to convince all of you to come visit us. I have quite a few friends in America who have done that and never stopped coming back.

André Victorio da Silva
Hi! I’m André Victorio da Silva and I’m 30 years old. I was born in Minas Gerais, but my parents moved to Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, State of Espírito Santo, when I was only one year old. I graduated in Pharmacy at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, my original hometown, with specialization in Quality Control of Medication. I work at Botica Moulin whose owner, Mrs. Cláudia Moulin, is a Rotarian at my Sponsor Club. My wife Fernanda and I have been married for almost two years but have no children yet. On my free time I like to enjoy the company of my wife and friends, play video games, soccer (I love soccer!) and see movies. On this GSE I’d like to visit local pharmacies, the Oregon State University, go to a Portland Trial Blazers game, play American sports like football and baseball and mix with people as much as possible to learn about their every day life, their culture and their way of doing things.

Marcela Meireles
Sponsor Rotary Club: Vitória – Praia do Canto – Distrito 4410

I´m Marcela, 33, I was born in Vitória, state capital of Espírito Santo. I graduated in Business Administration from Espirito Santo Federal University. I´m on my way to finish my master degree in Business Administration at Getulio Vargas Foundation. I´m the youngest in a family of three brothers. I work as administrator of a College of Education called Saberes. Financial and administrative areas are my job. I would like to know how Colleges in the USA organize and work their financial, academic and administrative departments. How do libraries work with students, and also how Colleges and Government deal with scholarship programs. Learn how American Colleges and Universities work.

My favorite hobby is traveling. Discover new places and get to know new cultures are always a pleasure for me. I also like to go to the cinema, museums and theatre. When I visit a city for the first time I usually go to its main attraction spots. In the case of Oregon, I would like to visit the Portland Metro Area because of its cultural attractions, parks and gardens. In the Southern area, The Crater Lake National Park is a place we can´t miss. To have the opportunity of enjoying its nature, outdoor recreation, wild and snow adventures is always a good invitation. I found out that there´s an Oregon Shakespeare Festival. If possible I would like to go to one of its presentation.

As we don´t have the cold and snowy winter in Brazil, it will certainly be very nice to visit and enjoy snow adventures. To visit a Ski Resort and experience this different kind of fun, try snow sports and appreciate the beautiful view of snow in the Valleys will be a nice moment.

To know new people through this wonderful GSE experience, learn and appreciate their history and their way of life, get to know their culture, see the world from a different point of view, will be the most important accomplishment of my GSE trip.

Mukina
Hello! My name is Mukina, I'm 30 years old and a Food Engineer with specialization in Quality Control. I work for Ducoco Food where I'm responsible for quality control of several industrial products like jellies, candies, desserts, coconut milk etc. I live in Linhares, State of Espírito Santo with my husband Alex. We have no children yet. We have many friends there and also in São Paulo where we are originally from. We love to travel and discover new places, to go shopping and to the beach though we have many lakes around Linhares. We also enjoy cooking, barbecuing, folk music and the easiness of the interior. I'm looking forward to meet new friends in Oregon and to learn all about their culture and life style.

Vera
Hello, I’m Vera Tose, 40 years old, and I’m from Vila Velha, a beautiful city near the capital of Espírito Santo, one of the states of Brazil.

I’m a journalist and I have two post graduations: one in Marketing and another in Business Communication Management.

I’ve been working with organizational communication for 15 years. Now I’m working in a private college named Faesa.

I’m married to João and we have a little boy named João Guilherme. We live in a house near the beach and the mall. I love to take care of my garden and sometimes walk around where I live, enjoying the weather, the view of the sea to have some peace.

I love to learn about everything, especially about my profession and different cultures. I like to make friends. One of my dreams is to speak English fluently, do a master in my area for teach in a college and visit many places in the world. I enjoy traveling, music, dance, theaters, cinema and being in contact with nature. I like visiting museums, performing arts, outdoor recreation, visiting parks, learning to play golf and shopping. I love going to amusement park!

I appreciate Italian food and barbecue. I like coffee too.

I’m so happy with this opportunity to know about Oregon and learn with the people who live there. I’m curious about my profession too, how the organizations communicate with people, employees and community.

I’m so glad with this chance!
